What Is Motorcycle Power-to-Weight Ratio?
The motorcycle power-to-weight ratio expresses how much power a bike produces relative to its mass — calculated by dividing engine output (hp or kW) by the bike's wet weight (kg). A higher ratio means quicker acceleration and better overall performance.
Wet Weight vs Dry Weight
Always use wet weight (with all fluids including fuel) for accurate comparisons. Manufacturers sometimes list dry weight which excludes fuel and oil — this flatters the ratio on paper but doesn't reflect real-world performance. When in doubt, add 15–20 kg to the dry weight figure.
Why You Should Include the Rider
A published power-to-weight figure describes the motorcycle alone, which is a machine that never rides anywhere. Adding rider and kit changes the picture substantially, and it changes it unevenly: an 85 kg rider in gear is roughly 50% of the mass of a 170 kg lightweight, but under 40% of a 230 kg tourer.
Take a 45 bhp, 168 kg machine. On paper that is 0.268 bhp/kg. With a 90 kg rider and gear aboard, the total is 258 kg and the real figure is 0.174 bhp/kg — about 35% lower. This is why small-capacity bikes feel disproportionately slower two-up, and why the same pillion barely registers on a large tourer.
Comparing Bikes Fairly
Two figures are only comparable if they were derived the same way, and often they are not. Claimed power may be measured at the crank or at the rear wheel, and the difference is significant — transmission and chain losses typically account for 10–15%, so a crank figure will always flatter a bike against a rear-wheel one. Weight may be dry, kerb, or wet-with-90%-fuel depending on the market and the era. Before comparing two machines, check that both numbers come from the same basis; otherwise the comparison measures the manufacturers' marketing conventions rather than the motorcycles.
What the Ratio Does Not Tell You
Power-to-weight predicts acceleration potential, not how a bike behaves. It says nothing about where in the rev range the power arrives — a peaky engine making its output at 12,000 rpm and a torquey twin making the same figure at 6,000 rpm produce identical ratios and completely different riding experiences, particularly in traffic or on tight roads.
It also ignores gearing, which determines how that power reaches the road, and traction, which caps how much of it can be used at all. Below roughly 0.5 bhp/kg, acceleration is mostly power-limited and the ratio is a decent guide. Above it, the limit shifts to traction and to keeping the front wheel down, and the extra power in the numerator increasingly buys less than the number suggests.
Finally, the ratio is silent on the things that make a bike quick on a real road: brakes, suspension, and how much confidence the chassis gives you. A modest machine that lets you carry corner speed will cover ground faster than a powerful one you are wary of.
