How We Research

BikeLabs publishes research-led buying guides. This page explains exactly where our information comes from, what our ratings do and do not represent, and where the limits of our knowledge sit.

What BikeLabs Is — And What It Isn't

BikeLabs is a research publication, not a test lab. We do not run a workshop, we do not operate a fleet of press bikes, and we do not conduct our own physical testing of the products we write about. We say this plainly because the alternative — implying hands-on testing we have not done — would make everything else on this site untrustworthy.

What we do instead is read carefully, cross-reference obsessively, and write clearly. A good buying guide does not require us to have personally worn every helmet. It requires us to understand the standards those helmets are certified against, to read what the certification actually measures, to compare published specifications accurately, and to explain the trade-offs in language a rider can act on. That is the work we do.

Where Our Information Comes From

Every claim in a BikeLabs guide traces back to one of the following:

  • Manufacturer documentation. Official specification sheets, owner's manuals, service documentation, and technical white papers. Where a manufacturer's marketing claim cannot be verified against its own technical documentation, we treat it as a marketing claim and label it as such.
  • Safety certification data. Published standards and certification records — DOT FMVSS No. 218, ECE 22.06, Snell M2020, EN 1621 for impact protection, and equivalent regional standards. These standards define precisely what was measured and how; we read the standards, not just the sticker.
  • Independent laboratory results. Published testing from independent bodies, most notably the UK Government's SHARP helmet safety scheme and comparable published programmes, where results are publicly available.
  • Published journalism and long-term owner reports. Established motorcycle press, technical forums, and aggregated owner feedback — treated as evidence to be weighed, not fact to be repeated. Where owner consensus contradicts a manufacturer claim, we report both.
  • Standard engineering formulas. The calculators in The Lab use published formulas — gearing mathematics, tyre geometry, power-to-weight — applied to manufacturer specification data.

What Our Ratings Mean

Our category scores are editorial assessments, not measurements. When we score a helmet 9/10 for noise isolation, that number does not come from a decibel meter we hold. It is our judgement, formed by weighing certification data, published measurements where they exist, manufacturer engineering claims, and the weight of owner and press consensus.

We score against consistent criteria so that products in the same category can be compared against each other on the same basis. A score is a comparative signal, not a laboratory result. Any figure on this site that is a measured value — a certified weight, a certification result, a published dimension — is attributed to its source.

What We Do Not Do

Stating this clearly matters more than any claim we could make in the other direction:

  • We do not conduct our own impact, abrasion, or crash testing.
  • We do not perform our own instrumented measurement of noise, airflow, or waterproofing.
  • We do not report riding impressions as though they were our own first-hand experience.
  • We do not accept payment, product, or any other consideration in exchange for coverage or for a particular verdict.

If a guide would genuinely require hands-on testing to answer well, and that testing does not exist in the public record, we say the question is unresolved rather than inventing an answer.

Accuracy and Corrections

Specifications change, model years shift, and certifications get updated. We date every article so you can judge how current it is, and we revise guides when the underlying facts change rather than leaving stale information in place.

If you find an error — a specification that does not match the manufacturer's documentation, a certification we have described incorrectly, a claim that is out of date — email info@bikelabs.com. Corrections take priority over everything else in the inbox, and substantive corrections are noted on the article itself.

Affiliate Links and Advertising

BikeLabs is funded by display advertising and affiliate commissions. Articles containing affiliate links carry a disclosure at the top of the page. Two rules keep this honest:

  • Conclusions come first. A guide's recommendations are settled before any affiliate links are added. Products with no affiliate programme are recommended on exactly the same terms as products that pay.
  • Advertisers get no input. No advertiser or affiliate partner sees content before publication, and none can request changes to it.

The Calculators

The tools in The Lab apply standard published formulas to manufacturer specification data. They give you a faithful theoretical model — your bike's real-world numbers will vary with conditions, wear, load and state of tune. We repeat this on every tool page because it is true and because the difference matters when you are spending money.
