Understanding Seat Height & Fitment
Seat height is one of the most important factors when choosing a motorcycle, yet it is frequently misunderstood. The raw number matters less than the gap between seat height and your inseam — the length of your leg from crotch to floor.
How the Fitment Gap Is Calculated
The gap is simply seat height in millimetres minus your inseam in millimetres (inseam cm × 10). A negative gap means you have excess reach — both feet will sit flat on the ground with bent knees. A positive gap means you cannot fully extend your legs to the ground while seated.
Suspension Lowering & Other Options
If your gap is 50 mm or more, consider suspension lowering links (typically lower the seat 25–40 mm), aftermarket lower seats, or boots with a thicker sole. Many manufacturers also offer factory low-seat options on popular models. Lowering the suspension does affect handling — particularly cornering clearance — so weigh the trade-offs carefully.
Measuring Your Inseam Correctly
Stand barefoot with your back against a wall. Place a hardback book between your legs, spine upwards, pulled firmly against your crotch. Measure from the top of the book spine to the floor. This gives your true inseam — the same measurement you use for trousers, but taken while standing rather than sitting.
