Is Commuting by Motorcycle Really Cheaper?
In most cases, yes — significantly so. A 650cc commuter bike typically costs 40–60% less to fuel annually than a family car. Add in lower tyre costs (motorcycles need two smaller tyres rather than four large ones) and less frequent servicing, and the annual saving can be substantial for typical commuting distances.
What This Calculator Includes
Fuel cost is calculated from your consumption figure and annual mileage. Tyre cost, tyre interval, oil cost, and oil interval are all editable — defaults are set automatically when you look up your bike by engine size, but you should adjust them to match your actual bike and riding style. A commuter on a small bike with long oil intervals will see very different numbers to a sportbike rider.
What Is Not Included
Insurance, registration, chain and sprocket wear, brake pads, and depreciation are not factored in. These vary enormously by rider profile, location, and model. As a rough guide, budget an additional $400–$800 per year for these items on a mid-size bike — still well below the equivalent car costs.
Car Comparison Assumptions
The car comparison uses a fixed consumption of 9.0 L/100km, representative of a typical petrol family hatchback in mixed commuting conditions. The same fuel price is used for both vehicle types.
